2007 Kidder Williams Melbourne to Launceston Rudder Cup and Series (Including TasPorts Cup) RESULTS |

After a very comfortable but slow race, the 81 remaining competitors in the
2007 Kidder Williams Melbourne to Launceston Rudder Cup have all crossed the
line.
With one withdrawal from the race on the morning of the start with HF Radio
failure the fleet was reduced to 81, sailing in three divisions over 4 Handicap
systems plus the dash for Line Honours.

The inaugural Yacht Clubs Teams Trophy was won by the team from Tamar Yacht Club; Allusive, John Joyce; Apollonius, Julain Robimnson, and Blue Sky, Richard Fisher. TYC was the only club to score points in the specified division in all three races.

The Heemskirk Consolidated Melbourne to Hobart race has now become two races in one. After parking up last night on the north east coast of Tasmania, requiring some cunning rock hopping in the dark. The larger end of the fleet reached Banks Strait early this morning to be greeted by strong north westerly winds and a glorious ride through the strait.

How prized a yellow cap? Ask the skipper of Electra. |
|
Not long after the start, one of the crew members on Elektra lost his Heemskirk Consolidated yellow cap overboard. Concerned for the actions of a distressed crewmember losing his irreplaceable limited edition cap the skipper swung the yacht around and retrieved the valued item before it could sink. Before he could be challenged for wasting such time during the race, the skipper assured crew that it was totally justified since the crew member that flew in from Perth for the race had not yet done a Man-Over-Board practice! Now that is dedication to crew welfare! Don

The Heemskirk Consolidated Melbourne to Hobart yacht race started from Portsea on 27th December at 11am. In celebration of the Centenary year of the Kidder Williams Melbourne to Launceston the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria broke with a 35 year tradition and has run both fleets to the finish line of that race at the mouth of the Tamar River.

Another Day Another Yacht Race |

Friday afternoon saw an exciting finish to the Kidder Williams Melbourne to Launceston race. The DK 46 from Geelong eXtasea taking Line honours in this Centenary race. The 54 strong fleet of entrants in the Heemskirk Consolidated Melbourne to Hobart race are continuing across the top of Tasmania. The first phase of the race is over but now they face the navigational and tactical challenges of the east coast course they have been set.

Geelong's season continues |
|
In 1907 Thomas Fleming Day mooted a yacht race across Bass Strait with his friend Mr Dickson of the then Geelong Yacht Club, not yet Royal. Day a great exponent of amateur ocean yacht racing, would undoubtedly be very happy that, not only is the race still running 100 years on but that line honours has gone to a Geelong based yacht.

26 hours after starting the Kidder Williams Melbourne to Launceston and the Heemskirk Consolidated Melbourne to Hobart races the first finishers are expected at the Tamar Heads around 2.30pm.
